field trip: makers mark

aging

i was in louisville for the derby a couple weeks ago (though, sadly, i did not attend. turns out, sugar does melt.) and while in town took a detour to maker’s mark and heaven hill for the day. if you find yourself in the area and are looking for something fun to do, i HIGHLY recommend doing some (or all) of the kentucky bourbon trail. most of my pictures were from maker’s mark as i fell in love with the grounds and the operation as a whole. everything is OLD. nothing has been modernized, including the original yeast starter, which they still use to this day. i didn’t realize how small the operation is at maker’s compared to the heavy hitters like jim beam. everything is made and bottled on site and most of the grains used are grown within a 100 mile radius (the majority come from a farm very close to the distillery). how’s that for buying local?

I never imagined that they would hand dip the bottles in the sealing wax. I'm sure your grandpa Bob would have known – he and his brother-in-law opened plenty of them.
